The holiday season comes fast. It can suddenly feel like there are a thousand things on your to-do list. Let’s be intentional, plan ahead, and actually enjoy these precious last few months of the year. Here’s a helpful month-by-month guide to holiday planning and organization:
October
Tip 1: Decoration Audit
While pulling out Halloween decor, take inventory of your fall and holiday decorations. Store them in clear, labeled bins for easy access later.
Tip 2: Share the Abundance
Review and Donate: Before the rush of the holiday season is the perfect time to declutter and review items you may no longer need. Consider donating items that no longer serve your story. Your unneeded items might become someone else’s treasure.
My go-to donation center in North County San Diego is Goodwill — There are so many locations for easy drop off and services our communities in so many ways.
Tip 3: Start your holiday planning:
Create your holiday Command Center: Set up one designated space (even just a drawer or corner of the kitchen) for holiday organization:
- Gift lists, shopping notes, and receipts
- Holiday cards, addresses and stamps
- Holiday event calendar
This becomes your go-to spot for all holiday planning, no more searching through the whole house to find that stamp and address for Auntie Cecile!
Need help setting up organizing systems that actually work for your family?
November
Tip 1: Stay organized:
Put everything on your calendar! Fall and winter are the busiest times for events. Take advantage of technology to take the load off your brain – add everything to your digital calendar so everyone can see plans and avoid overbooking. Make sure to include addresses to make rushing out the door easier!
Tip 2: Gift shopping kickoff:
Start shopping early using your gift lists. Wrap as you go and store in your designated gift space. I store mine in the guest bedroom closet.
Side note: Passing along info from the stars above and if you’re into astrology, my horoscope is telling me to start shopping for gifts as early as October because Mercury will be in retrograde most of November. 🤷♀️ 😂
Tip 3: Holiday menu planning:
Organize your holiday recipes, take inventory of serving pieces, and create shopping lists.
December
Last-minute systems: Set up a wrapping station, organize your travel essentials if you’re going away, and create a “launch pad” by your door for gifts and holiday gear.
Maintenance mode: Stick to your systems and enjoy the season you’ve prepared for!
Extra Tips:
Reduce The Stress: Systems That Support Your Sanity
With all the things happening this season, let’s not forget about our mental space. Here are some systems to keep you sane:
Shop early for gifts: Here’s the key, wrap them immediately and store them in a designated area until it’s time to bring them out. I store my gift wrap and ready to go presents in my guest closet.
Create a cozy retreat space – Designate one corner or room as your calm space where you can reset when the season feels overwhelming. Add a cozy blanket or your favorite candle to make it extra relaxing.
Simplify your gift-giving – Consider experience gifts, gift cards, or donations made in someone’s name to reduce shopping stress (and clutter). Speaking of thoughtful gifts – a gift card for professional organizing services makes an amazing present for anyone who could use some peace of mind in their home!
